Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin is using one of Mikhail Gorbachev's techniques in dealing with his conservative opposition, claiming that Western aid is critical in Russia's move toward a free-market economy. Western support for his reform efforts is one of Yeltsin's strengths.

As Yeltsin revives, so does his nation: Chretien will see changes on his visit this week

Chretien will find that Yeltsin has regained control of Russia and that the Russian economy is starting to expand when he travels to Russia in Oct 1997. Increasing Canadian trade with Russia will be an important focus of the visit.
