Safety concerns might keep foreign trucks out
Article Abstract:
The Dept of Transportation (DOT) has expressed concerns over the safety of foreign trucks that would cross the border starting Jan 1, 2000. A key provision in the North American Free Trade Agreement opens US borders freely to Mexican and Canadian trucks. Foreign trucks are currently limited to commercial zones, which are 3 to 20 miles from the border. The DOT said it does not have enough inspectors to handle the expected surge in truck traffic.
