Safety officials: Ford erred by holding back documents
Article Abstract:
Ford Motor was sternly rebuked by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for failing to provide key documents during three investigations of faulty ignition systems in the mid-1980s. The agency said Ford should have given its investigators six of 17 documents including warranty studies which indicated that 99 out of 100 ignition modules would require replacing. NHTSA warned Ford to be more forthcoming with its investigators about potential safety defects. Ford's 1983-1995 models reportedly have faulty ignition modules that can cause cars and trucks to stall during driving or fails to conduct electricity when the module overheats.

EPA looks at Ford's computers
Article Abstract:
Ford Motor is being investigated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Air Resources Board to know if the computers installed on its vehicles fail to warn drivers of non-compliance to emission limits. The computers in contention are those installed on vehicles made since 1995 and which have been upgraded by the automaker for its 1999 models. With the computers, drivers are alerted of problems such as misfires and gas vapor leaks and are advised when the vehicle will need to be taken for service.
