Troubled Penney's CEO to step down

J.C. Penney has announced the imminent resignation of James Oesterreicher as Chmn and CEO of the struggling department store chain. Oesterreicher will remain in his posts until a successor is chosen, suggesting that the action was mutually agreed upon. Analysts say that executive changes at the retail chain were already hinted at early in 2000 when it announced a restructuring program, including hiring from outside the company. Penney has been losing market share to smaller rivals and its stock value has been declining.
