Article Abstract:
The Bendigo Stock Exchange (BSX), the City of Greater Bendigo, Bendigo Bank, and accounting firm Ernest & Young in 1996 began discussions about redeveloping the exchange as a "small cap," Internet-based market. The first phase of this project which will be launched in 1998 with an equity matching service for small and medium enterprises. The second phase will be a limited trading facility for companies that trade through off-market means. The third phase will be development of a full-scale stock exchange for small-capitalization companies.

The Australian government is under pressure to lift the big four bank merger ban. National Australia Bank (NAB) believes it needs to acquire one of its fellow majors to compete globally. However, the Australian government believes there must be evidence of more competitive banking sector before it lifts the ban. A Standard & Poor's report released in March 1998 showed that while big banks recorded profit increases in 1997, smaller banks saw profit declines.
