The Canadian king: Jacques Villeneuve seizes Formula One's throne

Villeneuve won the 1997 Formula One racing title, becoming the first Canadian to win the title and the first person to win three international titles in one year. Two-time champion Michael Schumacher, who tried to run Villeneuve off the road in one match, finished three points behind Villeneuve.

Villeneuve, 24, won the Indianapolis 500 and the IndyCar drivers' championship in 1995. He is the son of the late race car driver Gilles Villeneuve and grew up in both Quebec and Monaco. He has signed a multimillion dollar deal to drive for Williams during 1996.

Villeneuve, a native of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, won the Indianapolis 500 in May 1995, and currently leads the PPG IndyCar World Series circuit by 30 points. The 24-year-old racer is the son of the Gilles Villeneuve, who was killed in a race in 1982.
