Securities industry posts improved 4th-quarter results

The Canadian securities industry has posted total operating profits of C$1.3 billion in 1998, down by one-third from C$2.1 billion in both 1997 and 1996. Profit after taxes, bonus payments and dividents reached C$395 million during the year, down by 50% from C$769 million in 1997, while return on shareholders equity was 11%. For 1999, the industry is projected to reach the overall revenue and profit levels registered in 1994 or 1995.

Transcontinental posts 10% profit rise, boosts dividend
