Forestry employees in British Columbia, who are represented by the Industrial Wood and Allied Workers of Canada labor union, are threatening to strike. The workers are negotiating with Forest Industrial Relations Ltd., which represents 70 lumber firms in British Columbia.

Timmins, Ont.-based Grant Forest Products Corp. may have increased its stake in Vancouver, BC-based Ainsworth Lumber Co. Industry analysts said that Grant Forest Products is working with Toronto, Ont.-based Nexfor Inc. in making a bid for rival Ainsworth.

Forestry coalition starts to splinter

On July 2nd 2000, Weldwood of Canada Ltd. reached an agreement with the Industrial Wood and Allied Workers of Canada union. This was the second lumber company to settle with the 12,000 striking coastal workers.
