Donald Stewart, the chief executive officer of Sun Life Financial Inc.'s Boston-based mutual fund unit, Massachusetts Financial Services Co. emerged from a clash with US regulators over allegations of improper trading. As a result, Stewart is struggling to contain the damage, and prevent client defections that have affected other companies racked by the industry-wide investigation.
