The World Cup of Hockey has attracted nearly all of the world's best players to its 8-nation round-robin. Organized by the International Hockey Federation, it supplants the Canada Cup as hockey's true world championship, until the 1998 Olympics, when pro players will be allowed for the first time.

Canada challenged the Soviet Union to a series of hockey matches in 1972 to prove Canada was the leader of the game. Professional hockey players dueled the Soviets for eight games, and Paul Henderson scored the match-winning goal for Canada with 34 seconds left in the final game.

The team of Natl Hockey League stars that beat the Canadian team showed the world that Canada is no longer unrivalled in ice hockey. In a way, the game was a prelude to the 1998 Winter Olympics, in which the US and Canada will be top contenders.
