Dance with aliens and save the world
Article Abstract:
Sega Enterprises Ltd. has introduced 'Space Channel 5' computer game for Dreamcast, selling at $39.95. The game is a simple one featuring 'Ulala' the space reporter, dressed in platform boots, orange gloves, green ray gun and pink pigtails. Ulala's mission is to save the human race from the enslavement of aliens determined to force human beings to dance to disco music. The object of the game is to have Ulala perform the aliens' dance steps exactly, thus saving humankind. Errors cost Ulala ratings, with the risk of her TV program being cancelled. Victories mean her ratings go up. Like many games designed in Japan, this one has little logic, but great visuals, music and rhythms.

Taking video games seriously, as art and product
Article Abstract:
In 'Trigger Happy,' Steven Poole reviews the history of the electronic game, beginning 40 years ago. In recent years, industry sales of $8.9 bil annually have overtaking motion picture box office receipts of about $7.3 bil per year. He argues that video games are an art form, and offering players a self-contained world in which to emotionally experience other kinds of reality. The book can be academic in its analysis at times. Overall, it is a serious effort to critically situate the video game within the arts.
