Telesystem still bidding for U.K. licences

Montreal, Que.-based Telesystem International Wireless Inc. and seven other telecommunications companies are bidding for five mobile telephone licenses being offered in the United Kingdom. The bids, which totaled over 20 billion in English pounds, are for licenses that will allow telecom companies to offer Internet-based communications services.

BCE reports record profit of $5.4-billion for 1999

Montreal, Que.-based BCE Inc., which is led by president and chief executive officer Jean Monty, has reported 1999 profits of $5.4 billion. BCE, which has spun off its Nortel Networks Corp., also reported revenue of $14.2 billion in 1999 compared to $13.6 billion for the previous year.
