Tire recall cited as Explorer sales fall 16% in October
Article Abstract:
Ford Motor Co reports that Oct 2000 sales of its sport-utily vehicle, the Explorer, is down by 16% compared with sales posted in the corresponding month in 1999. The automaker blames the sales fall to the tire recall made by Bridgestone/Firestone Inc, which is its leading supplier of tires. This may have also been a result of the company's decision in Aug 1999 to shut down its assembly plants that build the Explorer, its twin, the Mercury Mountaineer, and Ranger pickup to inrease the number of tires available as replacements.

Online retailers seeking vehicles that deliver
Article Abstract:
The exponential growth of online retailing has helped start a boom in the sales of walk-in and step delivery vans of different sizes. According to the National Truck Equipment Assn, sales of walk-in and step delivery vans increased sharply by 15.2% to 2.1 million from January through October, 1999. Sales of the largest vans which carry more merchandise increased 25% in 1999. This in turn has considerably boosted demand for automatic transmissions.
