US bids threaten gold merger

The planned merger of Wheaton River Minerals Ltd. and Iamgold Corp., Canadian gold producers is likely to be affected as a result of the proposals of two US mining companies, namely Coeur d'Alene Mines Corp. and Golden Star Resources Ltd. Coeur d'Alene Mines Corp has announced a bid of about $2.5-billion to acquire Wheaton River in a stock-and-cash deal while Golden Star Resources Ltd. unveils a merger proposal for Iamgold estimated at about $1.2-billion.

Wheaton River Minerals Ltd. and Iamgold Corp. have announced a $2,9-billion merger on 31st March 2004 that would create one of the world's top 10 gold companies, a million-ounce producer armed with cash for acquisition. The deal put together in 90 days would give the companies a head start to acquire developmental projects in coming months.

Wheaton River buys two mines

Wheaton River Minerals Ltd. has acquired two gold mines, one in Argentina and the other in Australia. The deal for the mines is valued at US$210 million. Wheaton is acquiring 25% of the Bajo de Alumbrear gold copper mine in Argentina, while it is acquiring all of the Australian mine.
