U.S. satellite firms fearful of China ban
Article Abstract:
The US Satellite Industry Association stresses that the Congress' plans to ban launches from China could result in the elimination of 16,000 jobs in the US commercial satellite industry and cut of $8 billion in revenue over the next half a decade. Prohibiting US satellite launches from China is being considered at the US Congress. The ban was passed by The House in May 1998, and the Senate is anticipated to consider the ban in summer 1998. The ban stemmed from allegations that satellite manufacturers Hughes Electronics and Loral Space & Communications provided China secrets following failed rocket launches in the country.
