Northwest mechanics OK contract

Northwest Airlines Inc and the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Assn agreed on a new contract to be signed on May 11, 2001 and will take effect on the following day. The union said its members voted 82% to 17% for the contract, ending a four-year dispute and averting a possible strike at the airline. The contract would give Northwest's mechanics a 24.4% increase immediately and a 37% total raise over four years, and a one-time bonus and back pay ranging from $13,500-$25,000 for each mechanic, according to income.

Northwest Airlines and its mechanics union, the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Assn, announced a tentative agreement that would avert a threatened strike at the fourth-largest carrier and make Northwest's 9,000 mechanics the best paid in their profession. The deal is up for a ratification vote from its members. The deal would provide mechanics with a 24.4% raise immediately and a 37% total raise over 4 years.
