Unsure what program to buy? Sample some shareware
Article Abstract:
Shareware is commercial software, but it is priced and distributed in its own way. The underlying philosophies of shareware are that software does not need to be expensive and users should have an opportunity to try software before buying it. Because it is neither advertised nor sold by leading retailers, shareware is less accessible than other software, but for those willing to seek it out, shareware can be a valuable resource. For an example, information managers at Coca-Cola Foods of Houston wanted to install an electronic mail system, but there were many options. Rather than gamble tens of thousands of dollars on a retail E-mail system, the company used a shareware program called RBBS as a low-cost option for determining needs. A good place to start a search for shareware is 'Dr. File Finder's Guide to Shareware,' $29.95 from Dvorak-Osborne/McGraw Hill, by Nick Anis and Mike Callahan.

What is Windows 3.0 really like?
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp's Microsoft Windows 3.0 graphical user interface is loaded on top of DOS and allows users on IBM and IBM-compatible microcomputers to execute commands by using icons, symbols, windows and pull-down menus. Included in the software package is a basic word processor, a notepad, a paint program, a calendar, a calculator, a communications program and a card file with a telephone dialer. Software for the relatively new graphical user interface is limited but the number of programs able to run on it is expected to increase.
