Web site turns miles into money
Article Abstract:
A new Web site established by former Northwest Airlines marketing head Mark Lacek and chaired by former American Airlines CEO Robert Crandall will allow frequent travelers to exchange small amounts of their mileage for discounts on electronics, gifts, luggage, clothing and other items upon its launching in Oct 2000. MilePoint.com will also enable airlines to lessen their mileage liabilities. Travelers with accumulated miles on participating airlines will be able to convert them to "Mile Point Money" at the rate of 2 cents a mile for discounts of 5% and more on merchandise.

Delta wins court order to get pilots to accept overtime
Article Abstract:
Delta Air Lines Inc's request for an injunction to end a no-overtime effort by pilots was granted on Jan 18, 2001 by a federal appeals court in Atlanta, GA. Reversing a lower court's denial of the airline's request, the appeals court judges stated that 'they found a concerted effort on the part of pilots.' The ruling was a victory for Delta, which has blamed pilot's refusal to fly voluntary overtime for thousands of flight cancellations since Nov 2000. The Air Line Pilots Assn said it would ask for a rehearing of the case.

Pilot shortages, weather maroon Delta passengers
Article Abstract:
Delta Air Lines Inc announced that it canceled over 2,000 flights from Dec 28, 2000-Jan 1, 2001 because of snow and pilot shortages. Atlanta, GA- based Delta has accused that the Air Line Pilots Assn is encouraging its members to refuse overtime flying to pressure the airline. However, the pilot union denied responsibility for the reduction in requests for overtime. Delta canceled over 7,500 flights altogether in December, or around 180 times as many as normal. Pilot overtime requests fell 75% in December from Dec 1999.
