The rise in petrol prices has affected consumers where smaller cars are all part of the new order and everyone is tackling the price rise in different ways. Unions are demanding a higher wage packet which will lead to inflation and higher interest rates, use of roads is lighter with people desisting from weekend getaways, and there is an increase in fuel docket redemptions.

The year 2004 was a year of good growth for the insurance industry as it benefited from huge profit hikes, rising share prices, and strong premium growth. But conditions are likely to toughen in 2005, as concerns grow about a transfer of wealth from the hands of the shareholders to the hands of the customers as insurers try to gain market share.
