Wireless IPO could net AT&T $13.2 billion

AT&T expects its wireless business to trade between $26 to $32 a share once it is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol AWE. The telephone company expects the IPO to generate $13.2 billion, twice as big as United Parcel Service's IPO, which amounted to $5.5 billion. The IPO, comprising of 414 million shares, would make up 15.6% to 17.5% of the wireless business. The latter represents AT&T's mobile phone business, its international wireless operations and a planned wireless version of regular local phone and high-speed data service.

AT&T falters at Net gate

AT&T Corp predicts that its earnings for the year 2000 will decline 0.9 cents to $1.80-$1.85 from the earlier range of $1.89-$1.94. The forecast, which was announced on May 2, 2000, caused the company's stocks dropping 14% on volume of 65 million shares. The 120-year-old firm also warns that its revenue growth for the year could be as low as 6%, rather than increasing 9%. On the day of the announcement, AT&T's shares dropped $6.81 to $41.94, while its wireless stock fell $2.25 to $32.25.

Wireless titan Qualcomm rockets 30%

Wirelesss communications chips maker Qualcomm of San Diego, CA, has announced its plan for a 4-for-1 stock split. The company's stock has increased from a 52-week low of $25 1/8 to a peak of $662 1/18 on Dec 29, 1999. Analysts said that the spectacular performance of the stock is backed by fundamentals. Qualcomm's technology is projected to be in 80% of wireless phones sold in the nextr decade, from the current 18% share of the market. In addition, sales of its wireless communications chips are projected to double 2001.
