Roadblock seen in Sprint merger with WorldCom
Article Abstract:
The antitrust division of the Justice Department has sent a 'fact memorandum' prepared by Stephen M. Axinn, an antitrust litigator from New York,to assistant attorney general in charge of the antitrust division, Joel I. Klein, with the recommendation that the government block the planned merger of Sprint Corp. and WorldCom Inc. However, executives from both firms contend that the Justice Department should refrain from basing its decision exclusively on analysis of market share because the telecommunications industry is changing too rapidly for a conventional antitrust analysis to be truly valid.

Wireless unit makes Sprint a likely takeover target; suitors ready as WorldCom deal collapses
Article Abstract:
As Sprint Corp.'s planned merger with WorldCom comes undone, due to antitrust objections raised by European and U.S. regulators, Sprint's wireless subsidiary, Sprint PCS, remains an attractive target for major telecom firms such as Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, Deutsch Telekom and BellSouth. Although it ranks fourth in number of subscribers, Sprint PCS runs the largest all-digital wireless network in the U.S., reaching 70 percent of the population.

WorldCom and Sprint end their $115 billion merger
Article Abstract:
In the face of opposition from regulators who feared that competition would be discouraged by such a huge new firm, Sprint Corp. and WorldCom Inc. dropped their plans to merge. Both firms are said to be in talks with other major international telecommunications firms over other possible mergers. Analysts expect that future consolidation in the industry will come in faster-growing areas such as broadband transmission services or wireless and data transmission services.
