Compaq meets forecast with flat revenue

Compaq Computer's reported its 1st quarter earnings early, at $329 million, up from $281 million this time last year. Revenue rose 1%, but shares gained 12%, partially on confidence in chief executive Michael Capellas. Weaknesses were in European sales and leftover Year 2000 delays.

Hewlett posts 6.5% increse in earnings for 2nd quarter

Hewlett-Packard Co. reported earnings of $816 mil on revenue of $12 bil. For the comparable Q2 1999 period, earnings were $766 mil on revenue of $10.5 bil. Earnings per share were 79 cents per share, up from 73 cents in the 1999 period. Most of the growth occurred in the personal computer sector, which experienced a 248% increase over sales for the same 1999 quarter. HP's Unix server business rose 26%.

Compag Computer Corporation met analysts estimates of their second-quarter earnings. Also, a growth in revenue is predicted by Compaq's executives. The company reported earnings to be at $387 million next to a loss of $184 million in the second quarter last year.
