Australian Prime Minister John Howard's 2001 visit to Shanghai in China to attend the APEC summit, proved to be a positive step in his campaign for reelection. With leadership as the theme of his campaign, Howard was given plenty of opportunity at the APEC summit to show himself as a leader in the company of other major leaders.
