Zenith bets the store on new TV; analysts question whether the company has time to reach its goal
Article Abstract:
Zenith Electronics Corp is spending so much time and money on development of high-definition television (HDTV) that industry analysts question whether the company will survive long enough to bring its research to fruition. Zenith is competing against Japanese, European and US manufacturers, trying to bring the first viable HDTV set to market. Zenith's consumer electronics division, producer of the second most popular televisions in the US, has not earned a profit since 1984. Zenith Data Systems, Zenith's computer division and a main source of income to the company, was recently sold to Groupe Bull for $496 million. Without a continuing source of income, it is questionable whether Zenith will be able to compete in the expensive HDTV research arena. Zenith will probably join forces with another company, through merger or by acquisition, to continue HDTV research efforts.

Best Buy's new stores irk Japanese suppliers
Article Abstract:
Best Buy Company Inc irritates Japanese suppliers with Best Buy's Concept 2 retailing strategy. The Concept 2 idea involves self-service in a warehouse setting. A no-frills approach allows Best Buy to sell consumer electronics at near the wholesale price, but Best Buy's Japanese suppliers - Onkyo USA Corp and Mitsubishi Electronics America Inc - say the lower prices affect their products' stature. Legal issues revolve around price-fixing, which Best Buy claims its suppliers are guilty of in their reluctance to supply Best Buy with products in a warehouse environment. Best Buy maintains that its Concept 2 stores are not warehouses, but many in the industry are unable to make a distinction.
