A brilliant voice that knocked down walls
Article Abstract:
Marian Anderson faced outrageous racism during all of her career. Early in her career, the brilliance of her voice earned her the key to Atlantic City, NJ, but no New York City hotel would give her a room. She was forced to sleep at the Harlem YWCA. The most infamous act of racism towards her came in 1939 when the Daughters of the American Revolution denied her the right to sing in Constitution Hall. Backed by Eleanor Roosevelt and the NAACP, she later sang before 75,000 at the Lincoln Memorial. A Gallup poll showed that 67% of the people polled agreed with Mrs. Roosevelt's action. Anderson always showed grace under pressure and she sang before royalty, as a goodwill ambassador for the US and eventually at the Metropolitan Opera House.
