A lost civilization
Article Abstract:
American society in the first half of the 20th century was marked by a fundamental belief in God as evidenced in the country's social and political structures. Many Americans who grew up in that period understood the central importance of the family. However, most of the sound moral values on which early American society was built have now been discarded. The social and political institutions which should be protecting society from decadence have themselves become promoters of the new paganism that advocates selfishness, materialism and hedonism. American thinkers are wondering whether society can survive this onslaught by the new paganism.

How poverty lost its meaning
Article Abstract:
Federal efforts to alleviate poverty have produced no tangible benefits and many consider the Personal Responsibility and Employment Opportunity Act of 1996 as another cosmetic concealment of what appears to be the government's retreat in the anti-poverty war. Since many of the poor do not vote nor otherwise participate in politics, the reasons why the federal withdrawal came about easily are socio-cultural in nature. The evolution of poverty to a point where it has lost much of its meaning, how this came about and a possible reason why are evaluated.

Paradise lost
Article Abstract:
Spontaneous outbreaks between security forces and separatist militants in Kashmir have left the war-fatigued population unsure of future peace. The Indian government thought state elections in 1996 would defuse anti-Indian sentiment, but India's most serious internal crisis lingers. The government continues its strategy of wearing down the fighting spirit of militant groups in the Kashmir Valley and hopes the local population turns against them.
