A new beginning as Chavis takes the helm
Article Abstract:
Chavis' struggle for rights began at age 12 in North Carolina when he joined the local NAACP and it has continued unabated. He is well known as a member of the Wilmington 10, a group of young people convicted of firebombing a white-owned store in Delaware during a civil rights protest in the 1970s. After four years in prison, all were cleared of the charges. While in prison, Chavis completed his master's work for a divinity degree from Duke University. In 1985 Chavis became the executive director and CEO of the 1.7 million member United Church of Christ's Commission on Racial Justice. He is an activist in the environmental movement against toxic dumps in poor and non-white neighborhoods. At age 45, he is the youngest executive director of the NAACP.

Richard W. Riley, the USA school-master - the impetus for change
Article Abstract:
The speeches of Wiley give clues to the Clinton administration's plans for education. The two-time governor of South Carolina fostered educational reforms there including the state's Education Improvement Act of 1984. Wiley has been on several important boards including the Carnegie Foundation Task Force on Meeting the Needs of Children, and the Duke Endowment. The Clinton Administration seeks to bolster the neglected Dept of Education. One of its priorities would be to save millions by changing the manner of student loans. A Chapter I summer school program is planned costing half a billion dollars which would provide 10,000-20,000 student jobs.
