Article Abstract:
The emergence of rap as a protest from a generation that faced betrayal of promises made, white-wing resurgence and survival of the fittest is discussed. While it is lauded as an authentic expression of people with ancient African oral traditions, the fact that some rap is an expression of materialism is deplored.

Eminem's rise to fame and his derogatory statements are examined in a socio-historical framework. It is felt that the fact that Eminem is white has given his career access to resources, opportunities and outlets that black rap artists who are equally gifted cannot have.
