A tale of three countries
Article Abstract:
It is important to consider the repercussions of the economic downturn in Southeast Asia in the period mid-1997 to mid-1999 for democracy in the region. It can be argued that, in general, the region has not democratized. It seems that economic growth, or economic shock, or growth followed by shock, have not prompted the emergence of democracy. In 1998, the extent of political change in Southeast Asia was closely linked with the severity of the economic downturn. A quite sharp downturn since 1996 was linked with a shift towards enhanced freedom in Indonesia and Thailand, but towards less freedom in Malaysia.
