Cambodia: return to darkness?
Article Abstract:
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations has offered membership to Cambodia despite the renewal of political violence there. Although a successful UN peacekeeping mission resulted in the truly democratic Cambodian elections of May 1993, the electoral outcome actually contributed to the further disintegration of the Cambodian political system and a renewed autocracy under the leadership of Hun Sen and his Cambodian People's Party. The international community can hamper Hun Sen's desertion of democracy by making its financial aid conditional upon free and fair parliamentary elections in 1998.

Cambodia: will the loser take all?
Article Abstract:
Economic growth seems assured in Cambodia but political stability is less certain as the Cambodian People's Party retains its grip on power despite losing an election. The country will have at least observer status in the Assn of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and is attracting foreign investment, albeit little for infrastructure improvement. Military and govt service staff reductions are underway and appear successful. A current rice shortage could increase corruption and aid the insurgent Khmer Rouge.

Political psychosis outlasts Pol Pot
Article Abstract:
Former members of the Khmer Rouge are still influential in the politics of Cambodia. Elections that are planned for July 1998 are likely to create more divisions, rather than calm the legacy of trauma left by Pol Pot. Until all parties in Cambodia's genocide recognize their roles, the process of healing the country's social, political, and economic infrastructure will be difficult.
