Canada: the real issues
Article Abstract:
Canada's centralized, publicly-funded health care system is popular because it sets the country apart from the US and its privately-funded system. This popularity also arises from the government's success in framing a system that is universal, comprehensive, accessible, portable and nonprofit. Although health insurance in Canada is socialized, people can choose among health care providers freely. For Canadians the issue hereafter will be how to better manage this successful system, belying the claims of those who defend the US status quo by misrepresenting Canadian health policy.

On being old and sick: the burden of health care for the elderly in Canada and the United States
Article Abstract:
A comparison of health care cost data shows that elderly Americans pay far more than elderly Canadians. This finding indicates that Canada's publicly-funded health insurance system is much more successful at saving the elderly from impoverishment due to expensive health care than is the mostly private US system. Older Americans are less healthy and more dissatisfied with their health care even though it costs substantially more. Older Canadians use their health services at about the same rate of growth as the Americans despite the difference in costs.
