Clinton moves closer to easing limits on arm sales to Latin America
Article Abstract:
The US government's policy of restricting sales of high-tech weapons to Latin America is on the verge of being lifted as the Clinton administration gave the go-signal for F-16 and F/A-18 manufacturers to submit technical and sales information to Chile. The decision was spurred by economic growth in the region and the emergence of democratically elected governments. US' decision to reenter the Latin American market is on a 'case-to-case approach' to avoid market losses in favor of foreign competitors. However, critics fear that the move may create an arms race among Latin American nations.
