Elections breed moderation in the Arab world
Article Abstract:
King Hussein of Jordan has been taking incremental steps to make democratic processes part of the governing systems in the Arab world, starting with his own kingdom. He firmly believes that the Jordanian people should take part in running the country. The 1989 National Charter defined Jordan's system of government as a parliamentary, hereditary monarchy. The parliament consists of elected representatives and approves the decisions made by the government. The King hopes to give as a legacy institutions founded on people's will. He asserts that rulers come and go, but such institutions live on.
