Environment and society: some reflections
Article Abstract:
The changing world scenario has eroded public confidence in established institutions and has reposed faith in sustainable development. The Earth Summit at Rio de Janeiro made a significant impact on the people. Changes at the individual level, such as the growing popularity of vegetarianism and increasing awareness of the growth of self and spirituality, are heralding an environmental revolution. The role of university research at this juncture is to accomodate these new cultural values into the framework of environmental development.

Negotiating toxic risks: a case from the Nordic countries
Article Abstract:
Negotiations between Sweden and Finland from 1985 to 1990 to reduce emissions of toxic organochlorines into the Baltic Sea showed the importance of risk perception in international environmental negotiations. Differing risk perceptions between the two countries regarding the dangers of chlorinated toxins resulted in the breakdown of negotiations. Risk perception and international negotiations share similar aspects that include posturing, unwillingness to compromise and the failure to reach a consensus.
