Environmental NGOs in Greece: the Acheloos campaign as a case study of their influence
Article Abstract:
Environmental non-government organizations (NGOs) have proved very effective in influencing environmental policy in Greece. This has been seen in the case of the campaign against the damming and part-diversion of the river Acheloos, where environmental NGOs also linked with European counterparts. The NGOs are influential in changing public opinion, but politicians and public employees are still strongly committed to traditional concepts of development.
