European nightmares old and new
Article Abstract:
Europe no longer faces the world outside its borders with its usual confidence. European security can be bolstered, however, by fostering greater cooperation among European nations, focusing on the problem of unemployment instead of monetary union, and convincing a pampered populace that it has responsibilities as well as rights. Europe should seek an expanded role in NATO, acquiring the strength to defend itself while retaining close US ties. Europe should also increase economic aid to its developing neighbors in Africa and the Middle East, especially Turkey and other modernizing Islamic countries.

Switzerland: the spectres at the feast
Article Abstract:
Swiss voters failed to ratify the European Economic Area (EEA) accord in a Dec 6, 1992 referendum that split the country along linguistic lines. The popular action caught most politicians by surprise with the opposition being led by Christoph Blocher of the Swiss People's Party. German-speaking and rural cantons led the opposition to the accord. The EEA agreement was unpopular with many Swiss because its lack of decision-making powers and facilitation of immigration seemed to weaken Swiss independence.
