Chirac's foreign policy: continuity - with adjustment
Article Abstract:
The foreign policy of France under the new President Jacques Chirac is expected to be consistent with previous French foreign policy, with some adjustments. Chirac hopes to ensure France a special role in the European Community with emphasis on security and defence. France is also in favor of the European Union's eastward expansion to improve ties across the Mediterranean. It seeks to help economically the Francophone countries of sub-Saharan Africa and balance France's policies in the Near and Middle East. Chirac supports Germany and Japan's entry into UN Security Council.
