Expect the unexpected
Article Abstract:
This article discusses how the changes in Spain since its entrance into the European Union in 1986 can be used as an example for East European countries that are applying for entrance. Spain had been forced to democratize in a relatively short period of time following the demise of the authoritarian regime of General Franco, and is an example of how long absences of democracy may inhibit countries from adapting to requirements of unionization, and how a country can catch up economically and politically with other member nations; for the East European countries, the author suggests there may be unexpected changes.
