An analysis of the socio-economic situation that China's new Premier, Wen Jiabao, has inherited, and the challenges that he faces. It is suggested that Jiabao has been lucky in that he has inherited a vibrant economy, but that he will be judged by the way in which he deals with the issues of land ownership and state enterprises, on which the future growth of China will depend.

The Chinese government's ways of limiting the freedom of speech implied by the country's prolific Internet use are discussed, as well as ways the medium will still improve the country's democratic spirit. The country's methods of control include a requirement that Internet service providers must cooperate with the Ministry of Public Security in registering all Internet users.
