How well the general course in personnel management is being taught: an accountability assessment of contemporary course syllabi in public and business administration
Article Abstract:
A substantial number of syllabi for social science courses collected in the National Survey of the Teaching of the General Course in Personnel Administration do not contain adequate information to guide the students. A good syllabus should include course coverage, learning objectives, a grading system, the instructor's policy on class and student work behavior, and where, when and how the instructor may be reached for consultation. Further research is needed to establish the causes for the omissions in the collected syllabi. One reason may be that the data had been given orally by the instructor.

Human resource management and job satisfaction in the Dutch public sector
Article Abstract:
Little attention is devoted to human resource management and job satisfaction in academic research on public administration. Private sector studies suggested that investing in HRM practices has positive effects on worker morale. Variables measuring HRM practices were combined with an analysis of determinants of job satisfaction in the Dutch public sector. The results showed that individual characteristics have negligible effect while HRM practices have a positive effect, which is largely indirect.

Continuity and change in public personnel administration
Article Abstract:
An analysis was made on a number of key characteristics and main themes adopted in research on public personnel administration. The study provides only a narrow perspective of the discipline of public personnel administration. Results indicate that persistence rather than change characterizes the topical focus of studies published in this discipline. This may be due to the dual nature of those who read public personnel research.
