Human rights and the Kurdish issue in Turkey: 1984-1999
Article Abstract:
Recent violations of human rights in Turkey have been the result of the government's fifteen-year war against the Kurdish Workers' Party. Both sides' violations of human rights can be traced back to the military regime's policy toward the Kurds in the early 1980s. The issue of human rights has tended to be used for political purposes rather than being seen as a moral issue.

The Islamist movement in Turkey and human rights
Article Abstract:
Islamist parties in Turkey have recently switched from a rhetoric of rights as based on community membership to one of universal human rights. Both conceptions of rights are present within the movement, however. This is at least as much a response to diversity within the movement as it is opportunistic.

Turkey in the middle east: the Islamic war with itself
Article Abstract:
Turkey has been sharply criticized for human rights abuses. However, it is dealing with many of the same issues that supposedly more "modern" European and American countries have dealt with in the recent past. Turkey's human rights record must be seen in the country's political context.
