In praise of the art of politics
Article Abstract:
Brazilian President Fernando H. Cardoso views politics as an art which needs to be revitalized. With the transition to a representative democracy in Brazil, political processes increasingly rely on the society's capacity for self-organization. However, the fragmenting of society and the simultaneous progress of participatory democracy create a paradox. The success of democracy relies on informed public consensus, which lends legitimacy to the government. The mass media plays an important role in this area. Oposition is also essential because it guides government policy toward public interest.

Governance that works
Article Abstract:
Democracy takes its form in different perspectives and diversifications, and effective governance is largely dependent on a nation's capacity to utilize its resources for the common good of its constituents. Critics and proponents continue to debate on the conflicting notions of democracy as a political theory and as an implement of the government. This creates a universal challenge of a fair and effective governance beyond the bounds of political theories.
