Latin America's four political models
Article Abstract:
The onset of democracy in Latin America since the 1970s has raised many questions about the process of adoption of the principles of democracy, its problems and needs; the development of models by Latin American theorists; the social and political forces related to these models and the prevalence of specific models in the transitional democracies. Latin America's acute social inequalities and poverty, and the influence of private business interests and the military are the two main challenges faced in the adaption of their own variant of democracy.

Columbia hews to the path of change
Article Abstract:
ColomboEs voters opted for a man who projected an air of determination and moderation that made him an appealing figure and was perceived as the candidate best able to lead the country to peace in reelecting President Alvaro Uribe by a landslide. The voters chose continuity with an administration that has carried out a major series of policy innovations especially in matters of security and the desire to give the president a chance to follow through with his policies explains Uribe's extraordinary success at the polls in 2006.
