India: fragmentation amid consensus
Article Abstract:
The Indian political scene in the aftermath of the 1996 general elections is marked by the fragmentation of political power and an evolving consensus on ideological issues, such as economic liberalization. The end of the dominant party era is characterized by regional power politics, decentralization and the shifting of the power base from the center to the state. The consensus on economic policy marks a significant shift away from the protectionism of Nehruvian Socialism. However, the consensus on the features and limits of the reform process subverts redistributional politics and efficient governance.

Enduring another election
Article Abstract:
There have been four elections in India and seven governments since 1989. Such frequent elections and changes in the ruling party attest to the instability and ineffectiveness of the governments that have risen to power since India gained its independence. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the 1998 elections by a plurality. As a new arrival in the political scene, BJP faces serious domestic limitations given its lack of a majority and international constraints especially with the nuclear testing it undertook.

India: running the world's biggest elections
Article Abstract:
India is the world's biggest democracy, no matter how imperfect it is. Nonetheless, the country has survived serious challenges to the democratic way of life and can pride itself in being able to host elections that have been relatively fair and generally represent the voters' will. A multi-party system exists to ensure a plurality of views and platforms. The democratic process can be strengthened further if the level of literacy is increased and economic development goals are reached.
