International environmental policy on air pollution from ships
Article Abstract:
Research has shown that air pollution from ships increased acid rain levels substantially, particularly in the northeast Atlantic region. In the wake of this discovery, there have been calls for regulations designed to solve the problem. However, the fact that such emissions emanate from sources not located on land makes regulating the activity much more difficult because of international law and international relations concerns. Moreover, the existing international institutional framework is inadequate to deal with environmental problems that are transnational in nature.

The European Union as an actor in international environmental politics
Article Abstract:
The European Union (EU) is involved in international diplomacy on environmental issues, and this raises the question of whether it can be considered an actor, or whether it is a group of member countries. The EU's role can be evaluated in four ways to assess whether it has the characteristics of an actor. Using these criteria, the EU appears to have been effective as an actor and has even sought to take on a leadership role. The EU is still a complex body which is undergoing changes all the time, and it has peculiarities which should be borne in mind.

Sustainability, subsidiarity and deregulation: new directions in EU environmental policy
Article Abstract:
The European Union has failed to implement sustainable development policies despite being under increasing influence from deregulation and subsidiarity. The effectiveness of the sustainability ideal and its representation are questionable. Economic measures to promote sustainable development have not been forthcoming due to local and national politics.
