Mexico's democracy: still a sham
Article Abstract:
Democratic processes remain unimplemented in Mexico despite the claims made by Pres. Ernesto Zedillo. The oligarchy represented by the Institutional Revolutionary Party still retains state control. It remains resistant to changes that call for broad-based power sharing and all the reforms made by Pres. Zedillo are designed to keep the ruling elite in power. Moreover, he has not established any mechanisms of accountability. Guerrilla movements, such as the People's Revolutionary Army, symptomize unresolved social ills engendered by a corrupt government. Only real democracy can solve these ills.
