Nature, development and national identity: the battle over sustainable forestry in Latvia
Article Abstract:
Environmental quality and conservation have come to be seen as public goods in countries from the former Soviet Union, in contrast to the earlier approach whereby man sought to harness nature. The debate on sustainable forestry in Latvia illustrates the conflicting needs of conservation and growth. Forestry officials tend to see their main goal as maximizing material production, while advocates of reform aim to improve biodiversity and landscape. These reformers are linked to western bodies, and the issue of conservation is linked to national identity.
