Petroleum creates few jobs directly and generates a volatile, ultimately unsustainable, revenue stream for countries with less oil, but a huge population like Nigeria it is different. The contribution of oil to national wealth might be seriously overstated unless used in particular ways.

The increasing interest of the western countries in the oil rich countries of Nigeria and Angola is discussed. Both countries have rampart corruption due to the absence of government procurement and auditing systems and a lack of transparency about revenue.
