Not looking forward to a new era in Iran
Article Abstract:
A replacement for Iranian President Hashemi Rafsanjani will be elected on May 23, 1997. Rafsanjani's fall from power reflects the rise of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's successor, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has assumed supreme authority within both the state and the Islamic hierarchy. Rafsanjani probably favored liberalizing Iranian society and foreign relations after his election in 1989 but the Islamic establishment, Iran's inflexible constitution and Khamenei's growing power defeated his plans. Many Iranians favor liberalization to avoid Iran's further social and economic deterioration.

At the turning point
Article Abstract:
Iranian president Mohammed Khatami faces opposition from traditionalists in his attempts to free his country from its economic problems and fundamentalist religious regime. The country's voters have repeatedly sent the message they will no longer tolerate chronic economic decline and intrusive Islamic orthodoxy. Cultural freedom under Khatami has increased, the dress code for women has relaxed, and political movements have been allowed to register.

Nuclear Poker
Article Abstract:
The UN Security Council is considering a report by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohamed ElBaradei, following its call for a freeze on Iran's uranium enrichment programme in 2006. The celebratory ceremony was provocative in both its timing and its determination t snub the international community, while attempting to reassure a primarily domestic audience that the country's aspirations remained peaceful.
