Nuclear precipice news?
Article Abstract:
An examination of the nuclear stand-off that has developed between North Korea and the United States, and possible escape routes that are open to the two parties. It is suggested that the stand-off is as much a result of the ambiguity, opaqueness and contradictory messages that have come from the US government as it is a result of North Korea's traditional "hermit-like" approach to the rest of the world, but that regional neighbours, such as Japan, fear that the situation could escalate to conflict as a result of a miscalculation by one side or the other. One possible way of deterring North Korea from its apparent intention to enter into an arms race would be if the US, South Korea and Japan entered into a common command structure with stated strategic priorities, binding the US into a genuine multilateral partnership and thus reassuring the North Koreans that the security priorities of the US were harmonised with those of its regional allies.

Gobbledygook
Article Abstract:
US policy towards North Korea has been a resounding failure, losing the US friends in the international community and alienating allies while the North Korean people continue to go hungry. It is argued that it is now time that the US agreed to talk with North Korea, but that this will require clear goals, a proper strategy for negotiation and the removal, for the time being, of the concept of regime change from the agenda.

Kindness to Korea
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the difficulties that the US, supposedly the most powerful state in the world, has had in dealing with North Korea, supposedly one of the world's weakest. It is suggested that this paradox may have few antecedents in history, but it has been no surprise to students of international relations or game-theorists who first saw the US manoeuvred about by the members of Cold War-era NATO.
